Hal Varian invented the role of 'Chief Economist' in tech when he joined Google in 2002. He designed Google's ad auction system, which generates over $200 billion annually. His textbook 'Intermediate Microeconomics' taught generations of economists. With Carl Shapiro, he wrote 'Information Rules,' the bible of internet business strategy.
